Quotations

"A grandfather was walking through his yard when he heard his granddaugther repeating the alphabet in a tone of voice that sounded like a prayer. He asked her what she was doing. The little girl explained: 'I'm praying, but I can't think of exactly the right words, so I'm just saying all the letters, and God will put them together for me, because He knows what I'm thinking.'"

 In Brief
Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of Mr. Hosokawa, a powerful Japanese businessman. Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening -- until a band of gun-wielding terrorists breaks in through the air-conditioning vents and takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different countries and continents become compatriots.

Without the demands of the world to shape their days, life on the inside becomes more beautiful than anything they had ever known before. At once riveting and impassioned, the narrative becomes a moving exploration of how people communicate when music is the only common language. Friendship, compassion, and the chance for great love lead the characters to forget the real danger that has been set in motion and cannot be stopped.

It's so unfair
One Thumb UpOne Thumb UpOne Thumb UpOne Thumb UpOne Thumb Up
I found this to be an incredibly powerful book and intend to read Ms. Pachett's other works. Life is so unfair that often the innate goodness of people gets twisted, distorted and mangled in politcal and religious systems. The terrorists were good people whose values were warped by years of surpression. They were people lacking a moderate voice and reasonable means of reaching their goals with dignity. If that had not been the case, General Benjamen whould not have left the classroom. The guests, were, for the most part, people's who's humanity and the ability to enjoy the simple things in life had evaoporated in the blast furnace of materialism, political correctness, industrialization, social convention and organized religion. Carmen and Fr. Arguedas pray to the same God. Cezar and Roxane sing the same music. Isn't it a shame we are all so confused when we are very much alike. This confusion is deadly especially in the world in which we live today. This book is timely and thought provoking, a must-read! Brava!
